William Rosecrans was placed in charge of 44,000 men and pursued Confederate General Braxton Bragg’s force into Murfreesboro, Tennessee. There he found Bragg’s 37,000 man force, and attacked on New Year’s eve. The Confederates drove Rosecrans forces back to Nashville where the lines held. Union reinforcements showed up and were able to hold off three days of Confederate charges.
