New XM-25 Headed To Afghanistan With SOF

The wingnuts over at DefenseTech are reporting that the new proximity programmable fuse gun, the XM-25, is headed into Afghanistan with Special Forces. It has one great trick, which is the user can program the explosive 25mm round when to explode. So if a sniper is shooting through a window and hiding behind a wall, you can program this to flies through the window and explode just as it passes the other side.

One trick pony. Heavy. Will not fix Afghanistan.

You have missed another benefit. 700 meter range. That makes car more effective than an M203. So what does 700 meters mean? Its almost like bringing a portable mortar with you. Sure, the range is shorter, but so is the time-to-impact on the enemy (think of having to call in the fire mission to the mortar team.

The programmable round also means that those guys hiding on top of the ridge trying to be snipers will be touchable within 700 meters as the round goes above them and explodes.

So it’s more than just a room decorator. But still, it won’t change Afghanistan, true.

You’re right. It’s probably a much better weapon than I stated. I guess I get frustrated with the weaponology. In WWII, our weapons were rarely any better than the Nazi’s weapons. But we won anyway.

In Vietnam we had far better weapons and lost.

You could nuke all of Afghanistan and still not change their minds about how they want to live and who or how they will resist.

I think the greatest weapons produced are those that are in response to a specific problem. XM25 may qualify here. The big bunker buster used against underground complexes during DS1 is another.

Where one needs to be wary of weapons are when they are developed in peace time as a game-changer for the “next war” (re: last war). That’s a pretty good acid test of the usefulness of the system as wellas the level of suck and churn its development will produce. The P-51 was developed in weeks. The F-35? I could go on.

The XM25 is an excellent infantry weapon. This weapon sites in the target, programs the round, very impressively and accurately dispenses a round equal that of a .105 caliber. In any conflicts in Afghanistan since the arrival of the XM there have been less rounds used, less coalition causalities and shorter fire fights. This is weapon means death to those who face it.

The XM really helps you ‘reach-out and touch’ your enemy. A Col. now training before deployment is asking the Canadian Forces to invest in the XM.
