PBY-5 Catalina Flying Boat

For a long time flying boats were a workhorse of the US military, carrying everything from mail to medicine to personnel. They have fallen by the wayside, and probably because the infrastructure to support floating planes have all disintegrated.

World war II was the end of the flying boat. Suddenly airfields sprung up all over the place, most notably the pacific islands which were rich flying boat destinations. All the Henderson Fields of the pacific could now handle piston transports like the DC-3. That was it for the Clippers.
