Why We Took Dod Buzz Off Our RSS Feed

by Daniel Russ on January 23, 2010

For seven months I have been linking to and reading and commenting on Dod Buzz, a blog that has journalists with access to Pentagon sessions that reports on upcoming and ongoing issues related to national defense.

The comment section is sharply divided between a few progressives and lot of rightwing reactionary extremists. The editors see fit to allow comments that smear the Democrats as “defeatocrats” and “commies” and “socialists”. But when I called one of their right wing nutcases a rightwing nutcase, they chose to edit out the comments.

It’s an old case of IOKIYAR (It’s OK if you’re a Republican).

Seeing that it’s alright to call the Commander in Chief “Barry” and Obamanation but not allow redress to these smears, we took it off.

You might not like it. But it’s my blog.

That said, I am no big fan of Obama. He turned out to be another tone deaf corporate hack who allows lobbyists to walk all over his agenda, you know…Change you can believe in. He doesn’t just sit by while the foxes guard the henhouses and steal the eggs, he puts them in major positions of power, and surrounds himself with rich inside the beltway center right advisors who have no idea the pain the Bush policies caused and the realities outside of their talk show/pundit bubble. They also don’t seem to understand that we voted for Obama so we could have health care, not fellatio for the private health insurance industry that allows its customers to die because treating them would too expensive. We voted him into office for reasons like that, because it is a stomach turning fact that shareholder profits trump the needs of sick Americans, even children and those swore out an oath to the flag and served in harms way, but now need a little help.  His advisors don’t seem to understand that the twenty some odd million new voters who put Obama in office will not show up again because they don’t see any real change. Just more of the same: corporate control of our government. Once again, we have a Democrat who fights by the Queensbury rules while the Republicans are cage fighting. Or as my friend Bryan Jessee says about such matters: same clowns, different circus.

So I don’t have much Hope for his administration and I think this is a backlash from the Independents and Dems who put him in office but got no relief and all are resigned to see a hopeful candidate about nine months away from being essentially a lame duck who cannot get a single robust agenda item through despite a super majority in both houses of Congress.

But the issue with Dod is one of fairness. They do not edit out comments that call starving veterans “welfare queens”. They are fine with smearing the vast majority of people who voted the last two elections. But a riposte is beyond the pale for them. That’s too bad. But it is the state of the country right now. As William Butler Yeats wrote : “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity”

One final thing. They employ software that takes cuss words out of the text and replaces it with ***. OK. So if you write the word cockpit, it renders it as ****pit. OK. Stupid.  But it is also the state of our society. A country that invades a country based on WMDs that never show up, causes upwards of 100,000 civilian deaths in the botched occupation, execute prisoners, imprisons people for 20 years over a bag of pot, but a finger flipped off  is pixelated and the words fuck and shit and damn are bleeped out to protect us, I guess. Oh, the irony.

Does that mean no more heated arguments back and forth on DoDBuzz comments? That’s a shame.

I am sure they will have heated arguments. But on one side of the aisle, not both. That’s the problem.

Anyway, it’s no great loss. Our readership is growing quite well.

I was a reader in a couple of blogs from that side Dod,Deftech and milcom and I grow weary because they let the politics take over.

They totally let the politics take over. Sometimes the comments read like Fox and Friends.
