Handgun Deaths In US: 10,000/year. Total Lawn Dart Deaths: 3. Lawn Darts Have Been Banned.

by Daniel Russ on January 5, 2010

Just a few statistics, in the US, there are over 10,000 deaths a year due to hand guns; there are over 700,000 injuries a year due to handguns, there approximately 90 guns for every 100 U.S citizens.

In 1988 lawn darts were banned, the result of  3 deaths.

Just something to think about.

I was wrong about the 700K number. Here is what I meant to say.

1999 saw 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental firearms discharges.

On average there are 165,000 handgun assaults in US per year. Which means about 19 people are shot at a an hour in the US.

Hand guns are also used in a children’s game.

You’re a sick puppy steve

how about writing an article?

The total number of gun injuries quoted in the this article is WRONG. The author quotes the number of handgun injuries at 700,000 a year, which is over 10 times the actual total.

In reality, the total number of firearm injuries in 2010 (which includes both long guns and handguns) is 64,389. This 64,389 includes injuries from criminal assaults as well as suicides.

Naturally, this 64,389 ia an unacceptably high number, but is nowhere near the 700,000+ that the author recklessly quotes. This article should be stricken from this website, as it is incredibly skewed – in reality this article is just anti-gun propaganda.

My headline figure was wrong. Here is what I meant to say. Or should have said:

And no. I am a gun owner and I have hunted.

1999 saw 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental firearms discharges. That’s almost 75,000 bullets flying around this country a year and that does not include what law enforcement officers fire.

There are 55 people shot per 100,000 people in the country. So with 300,000,000 people in the country that comes out on average to 165,000 handgun assaults in US per year. Which means about 19 people are shot at an hour in the US.

Another point here. First of all, thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. I am pointing out how rumor and legislation often hold hands. A meme about the danger of lawn darts far out weighs how benign the toy actually is. The irony of this is that there are around ten children under 18 a day that are hit with bullets in America. While I believe in the Second Amendment, I think this is a tragedy that the framers of the Constitution never anticipated.

So when you say assault do you mean what assault actually means or the number of people that have received a bullet wound? Last I checked assault was when an individual is in fear for their well being, and battery was actually receiving physical contact/damage.

“An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm.”

“Battery: At common law, an intentional unpermitted act causing harmful or offensive contact with the “person” of another.”

It’s fair question. I think I will over my notes and sources I think this statistic meant a bullet was fired.
