Robert Toombs

As the South dug in over states’ rights and slavery, Toombs switched affiliation to the Unionist Party, then the Democrats, becoming increasingly bellicose along the way. His political prospects just kept rising. His rhetoric soared. As an orator, Toombs had extraordinary skill and power. “Defend yourselves! The enemy is at your door” he boomed on the floor of the Senate in early 1860; “wait not to meet him at your hearthstone; meet him at the doorsill, and drive him from the Temple of Liberty, or pull down its pillars and involve him in a common ruin.””
