EFW N-20 “Arbalete” – Switzerland Tries To Build Its Own Fighter

by Daniel Russ on October 8, 2018

The EFW N-20 “Arbalete” (“Crossbow”) was part of a long campaign to provide Switzerland with and indigenous jet fighter bomber. At the end of the day a wooden glider was the test aircraft until a prototype could be built. The idea was to put everything important on a central triangular configuration amid ship, and then covered with a wing that blends into the fuselage under a swept back delta wing of considerable durability. The glider flew in 1948 and then the actual aircraft flew in 1951 and reached 354 miles an hour.
