The first military aircraft produced by the Bell Aircraft Corporation once called the “Bell Model 1, it then became The Airacuda in 1937. The concept was a powerful and large and highly armed aircraft that was a cross between a bomber and an interceptor, and it would hopefully become a bomber killer. This plane had odd flight characteristics and test pilots did not feel safe in it. The twelve prototypes hd so many pronblems they were called  “Hangar queens”.

The Airacuda was supposed to be Bell’s “bomber destroyer” aircraft. Even though the Airacuda did see production, and a single fully operational squadron was created, only one prototype and twelve production models were built in the end.

Expensive at the time, it came in at over $200,000 a plane.
