The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender was a  US 1940s Uprototype fighter.  It competed with the Vultee XP-54 . It was the a request from the US Army Air Force that asked designers to eschew the typical and show unconventional thinking. it specifically allowed for unconventional aircraft designs. A highly unusual design for its time, it had canards  in front a aft mounted engine. It featured a tricycle landing gear and improved vision for pilots.
