Its Moniker was “The Hoop”, anointed so by NATO during the competitive Cold War projects between the East and the West. The idea was one of many rotorcraft/fixed-wing hybrids. This on was famous for its nickname “Vintokryl” or ‘screw wing’.

The Ka-22 was supposed to be faster than a helicopter and carry more than a fixed wing aircraft. It did set many world recrds during it short tenure.

Two of the three prototypes crashed and the program was cancelled.
