No Virginia, Franklin Roosevelt Did Not Ride In Al Capone’s Armored Car.

by Daniel Russ on November 15, 2015

History doesn’t just repeat itself. Sometimes it invents itself. There is a popular story that when the Japanese attacked the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, the President and his protectors were in search of a car that could safely protect hm on the way from meeting to meeting.

By this time in America, the Tommy gun wielding gunmen of organized crime was an image out of the movies. Cars seemed to be the ambush venue of choice. That all said, it is a fact that Al Capone created an armored car for his own protection. It was a 1928 Cadillac bolstered by sheet metal on the sides and in front.

The fact of the matter is that the car was auctioned to someone for $37,000 and it ended up in a British Museum display. Roosevelt never took the car to deliver the famous “Infamy” speech.

It will the first time since Prohibition-era gangster Capone that authorities in the city deemed a crime figure so ominous a threat to deserve the label.
