Mary Chesnut’s diary of the American Civil War is a slice of history like little is bound to find .his South Carolina author painted life during the war as a  Southern White Aristocrat’s wife. It is fascinating to say the least.

These negroes were rewarded by their owners. Now if slavery is as disagreeable as we think it is, why don’t they  all march over the border,  where they would be received with open arms?  It amazes me. I am always studying these creatures. They are to me inscrutable in their ways and past finding out.

Dr. Gibbes says the faces of the dead grow black as charcoal on the battlefield and they shine in the sun.

Now this horrible visions of the dead haunts me.
