On September 14th, 2012, 15 Taliban operative disguised in American uniforms, stormed Camp Bastion

Using small arms, mortars, RPGs, suicide vests and grenades the 15 men attacked and destroyed six AV-8B Harriers from the Marine Attack Squadron 211, based in Yuma, Arizona. Marines have less than 100 active Harriers.  This loss was telling. Meanwhile the Marines are awaiting the delivery of the much diminished and disparaged F-35. The attackers killed two Marines, and wounded six others. They also seriously damaged two more Harriers.

U.S. Central Command, Marine Corps Commandant General James Amos has fired the two generals, Maj. Gen. Charles M. Gurganus and Maj. Gen. Gregg A. Sturdevant.

This is the first time a Marine general was fired for negligence and the inability to defend a base since Vietnam.
