The Largest Gun Ever Fired.

by Daniel Russ on November 4, 2009

The Dora, a German artillery gun is the largest gun ever fired. It was so big it had to be moved by rail. It was built by Schwerer Gustav and weighed 1300 tons. It was used a few times especially to break up the heavily fortified Maginot Line and threw a 31.5 inch shell about 12 miles. It was so big it required about two and half days to prepare and a crew of over 200 men.

There were two pieces of this gun. One of them was named “Schwerer Gustav” (heavy Gustaf) by its crew. Both guns were developed by Krupp. The other piece that was made was named Dora by its crew. Apparantly (according to Wikipedia) they started on a third one, but that one was damaged in an airraid and never used. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwerer_Gustav
