The M2 Grenade, Pineapple, Made Famous By Hollywood, and US Military

The M2 or Pineapple Grenade was a small explosive device used by US soldiers in World War II. This is the most recognized hand grenade to Americans as Hollywood made it famous in literally thousands of films. It has a pineapple shape that made it easy to grip and of course easy to fragment into square shaped shrapnel. It was power by TNT and was produced in a number of different versions and had a number of different detonators on it.

It was operated by pulling the pin, and then releasing the handle or spoon. Once the spoon left the device, the “user” has about 7 to twelve seconds to toss it at least 30 feet away or into a window or door before it exploded.

The real question is, how many soldiers had to pay a visit to the dentist after pulling the pin with their teeth? Or was that just Hollywood?

It was eventually replaced by a baseball shaped grenade now in use. The baseball shape made it easier to throw accurately.
