Law Limits The Number Of Generals Who Can Serve Active Duty At Any One Time.

by Daniel Russ on July 3, 2013

There can be no more than 660 active duty military officers at the rank of General at any one time. US Code of law explicitly limits their number. Total active duty generals in the Army allowed are 230. 208 for the Air Force, 162 for the Navy (Admirals) and 60 for the Marines.

Four star generalship is also limited. Seven generals is the maximum for the US Army. Nine is the limit for the Air Force, and only six admirals are allowed. The Marines can have two four star generals.
