The Perpetual War Republicans.

The Colonials and later the Americans for the most part disliked the idea of a standing Army. Standing armies were the instruments of dictators and absolute monarchs. Europeans had lengthy memories of standing armies that were far more likely to visit violence upon civilians than soldiers than an invader. Armies have been the tools of the devil, the Napoleons and the Leopold IIs and the Mussolinis. In 1774, Josiah Quincy wrote in Boston: “What a deformed monster is a standing army in a free nation?”

Today’s Conservative has moved so far to the right on the issue of gun ownership that one would hardly recognize Reagan today as a Republican. He once said during the 1985 inaugural address: “We seek the total elimination one day of nuclear weapons from the face of the Earth.”
Or does anyone remember the Eisenhower who said in April 1963: Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This is a world in arms. This world in arms is not spending money alone; it is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. . . . This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.”

Imagine a Republican senator from Ohio in 2013 saying something like this: “We will have to maintain a police force perpetually in Germany and throughout Europe…the American people don’t want to rule the world, and we are not equipped to do it. Such imperialism is wholly foreign to our ideals of democracy and freedom, it is not our manifest destiny or our national destiny.” This is what Robert Taft said on May of 1941.

Imagine a North Dakota Republican saying that weapons should only be manufactured by the government. Imagine a Republican in 2013 that would pass something that would keep fully automatic weapons out of the hands of citizens. That was what Gerald P. Nye, North Dakota Republican Senator in 1934 pushing the National Firearms Act.

Today’s GOP is the war party. They have completely lost their moral objection to ubiquitous firearms, even in a country that records gun violence at roughly 30,000 a year shot dead with a gun by their own hand or some other. The GOP wants to give constitutional protection to an undifferentiated stem cell, but 30,000 gun deaths a year mean nothing. Fetuses cannot be touched. But if firearms are used to kill almost anyone else, in almost any circumstance, the Second Amendment stands inviolate.

It was Ronald Reagan that sold us on the idea of a Peace Dividend, a way to spend less money and put some of it in the bank for a rainy day. But e never got to really see that. In fact we never got a peace dividend. In 1947 the Lockheed Martin chief helped convince the senate to fund constant weaponry research. After the Nazis came the Commies and that was the beginning of imperial America. After the Commies came the Terra-ists and so we are at perpetual war.

Over half a century since World War II, 300,000 US military personnel man posts around the world. This includes over a thousand bases across the world, some doing little more than storing ammunition. Much of the money we spend in Germany and Italy has little to do with defending America at all. Today’s GOP is so hardened to ideology, they would rather Americans die from illnesses they could be treated for than reduce defense spending, no matter the obvious waste.

The Army is a tool for bureaucrats and capitalists. When less than a single percentage of the country has ever served, yet the industry itself is bigger than anything in the world, then we are being played, and spent. Not the other way around.

So true… I hadn’t heard the earlier Repub. quotes… But, I have seen how the Dems. & Repubs seem to be doing a kind of dance, back-and-forth, back-and-forth… I describe it like this: Congress is like the NFL, like the N.E.Patriots, in fact… When the Pats are playing some other team – the Cowboys, for example, sometimes they win, sometimes lose… But, during the game, sometimes the defensive squad is in play on the field, other times the offensive squad comes in and runs the ball… Either way, both squads, defensive & offensive, are the SAME TEAM… Today, there is NO DIFFERENCE between Repubs & Dems… They BOTH ONLY SERVE the Global Money & Power ELITES… That’s all… And, the tighter they try to control 7Billion people, the more they lose control… Sure, I get dismayed, scared, even, but mostly, I just laugh… Laugh. We will win, in the end, live is too precious, too strong… BUT, how many needless deaths too soon…???… That saddens me.
Anyway, ~SEMPER~FIDELIS~America~…it may be a messed up Country, but it IS MY messed up Country, and OUR PEOPLE…
