Gyrodyne received an invitation to participate in a requisition competitition to produce a single seat “personal” helicopter and observation platform.

 

These machines were fairly simple, coaxial rotor layout, 40 hp Nelson H-59 engine and variants were powered by a 60hp Porsche. Wireless controls worked well enough back then to give the rotorcraft quite a range.

 

Eventualy unmanned versions of these rotorcraft were produced called the XRON-1. 50 copies were manufacturered and used by the US Navy.
