In 1957 Army Transportation Research Command awarded Piasecki Aircraft a contract for the development of a ‘flying jeep’ – type VTOL research vehicle capable of operating at low altitudes at speeds up to 110kph.
In other words, a flying car.
That said, Piasecki developed the Model 59 K or “Sky Car”. It featured a fixed tricycle wheeled landing gear, a single seat for the pilot and a single set for a passenger each under a rotor duct of two Lycoming Engines. Maximum speed was about 85 miles an hour.
