Tecumseh, Chief of the Shawnee

Governor of Indiana Territory, Christopher Harrison, was negotiating with Tecumseh, the Chief of the Shawnee in 1810. Tecumseh arrived and the Governor had a large chair brought in for him. The servant who brought the chair in said “Your father has provided a chair for you.”

Tecumseh replied: “My father is the sun. The earth is my mother and in her breast I will die.”

With that, he stretched out on the floor.
