She hid Jewish children in coffins and shipped them away from the Nazi occupied portions of Poland where Jewish children were targets of opportunity. She and her organization Zegota would convince Jewish parents walled up in the Warsaw Ghetto to let her remove the children, sedate them and then smuggle infants and teens through subterranean corridors under the Warsaw Municipal Law Courts. She bribed Polish police officers. She took Jewish children into homes and they emerged with papers declaring they were Catholics. She put children under the floorboards of ambulances and drove them out to safety.

Irena Sendler was born Irena Krzyzanowska in Otwock, Poland, on Feb. 15, 1910. She died on the 12th of September, 2012 at 98.
