The Day The Passengers Had To Pick Up The Bill.

OK, so this is a first I believe in aviation history. So earlier this month an Air France flight from Paris to Beirut, Lebanon had to be diverted to Damascus, Suria.

Turns out that France had imposed sanctions on Syria because of the internecine fighting and the apparent crimes of the Assad government. One of those sanctions was limiting credit to Syria. So Syria not only would not refuel the plane, they would not take credit cards. They were convinced to refuel the plane but the pilots had to ask for cash from the passengers. They managed to dig up enough lucre to pay for a flight to Cyprus where they did take credit cards.
