Ernest Borgnine, (January 24, 1917 – July 8, 2012) a graduate of James Hillhouse High School in New Haven Connecticutt, 18  year old Ernest Borgnine joined the United States Navy six years before Pearl Harbor. He served as a Gunners Mate 1st class aboard the destroyer USS Lamberton (DD-119). Borgnine was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Borgnine died  of renal failure. He was 95.

Thanks for a great story! I was so saddened to learn of this American hero’s passing! There is a great little restaurant in NYC that holds an annual Ernest Borgnine Night (http://www.tortillaflatsnyc.com). He was such a class act and while I’m not a celebrity hound, I would have loved to have met him!! May you rest in peace, Mr. Borgnine!
