In the 1960s, Americans and the United States military and public information establishment went underground to find protection from the looming threat of Soviet nuclear missiles. Nuclear missile silos were built all over north America. These structures were massive seven to ten story launch facilities that held a rocket, a warhead, targeting telemetry and high technology communications equipment. The missile would typically be manned by no less than two men 24/7 for an entire generation. When the missile silo technology became obsolete, the government old off the properties. People were also encouraged to build their own bomb shelters. Either way, some cool living spaces are born out of this mishigass.
