Brazil will buy 36 Dassault Rafale strike fighters, giving France the first export order for its aircraft after years of trying.
The deal cements a growing defense industrial strategic relationship between Brazil and France. Brazil is already buying 50 EC-725 transport helicopters and will develop, with French help, nuclear submarines.
Now, as part of the F-X2 deal, France has offered to help Brazil develop the KC-390 military airlifter. It may also buy 10 of the Embraer aircraft, which is still only a paper design and will not be fielded until around 2015. The KC-390 has 19 metric tons of payload.
The French win is a setback for Saab’s Gripen and Boeing’s F/A-18E/F, who were also in the running.
