General Dwight David Eisenhower, Supreme Commander, Allied Forces, WWII

Before embarking on a political career, Dwight Eisenhower was courted by both major parties. Shortly before his first run for President he was asked whether he was a Republican or a Democrat. His reply was perfectly presidential: “I,” he said, “am an American.”
