Yuri Gagarin, First Man In Space

From Yurisnight

On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin blasted off the launch pad in Baikonur at 9:08 AM local time. His call-sign for the flight was “Cedar.” Sergei Korolev, the Program’s Chief Designer, would call from the ground, “‘Dawn’ calling ‘Cedar.’” Gagarin made his historic 108 minute flight (orbiting around the whole Earth once) and parachute landed near his Vostok 1 capsule in the plains of Russia. This flight made him the first human to orbit the Earth and an international hero. Yuri was only 27 years old.

Seven years after his flight, on Wednesday 27 March 1968, Yuri was piloting a MiG-15 when he got into a tragic crash that ended his life. He was 34. People say that that is why John Glenn was not allowed to fly again for so long – to protect him. Yuri is survived by his wife Valentina and his two daughters, Lenochka and Galochka.

The Cosmonaut program is rich with traditions that honor Yuri’s first flight. It is customary to visit the Gagarin Memorial before your mission, to sign the log book in Yuri’s unchanged office, and to urinate on the tire of the bus that brings you to the launch pad (mostly because Yuri had to himself right before his flight). We hope the world will celebrate 12 April together and create new traditions of space and unity.

So around the world a party is thrown to celebrate the entry of the human race into the space age.

Nem Gagarin járt a világűrben, hanem az űrhajó konstrukrőr fia.

Daniel Russ April 10, 2011 at 8:31 pm

I think that meant

“Gagarin was not the universe, but the spacecraft constructőr’s son.”

YURI GAGARIM? UM GRANDE HOMEM? PORQUE? VAMOS ANALIZAR O QUADRO. ELE VIVIA NUM AMBIENTE TOTALMENTE TRAVADO, ONDE AS PESSOAS NÁO TINHAM O DIREITO DE FAZER NADA QUE NÁO FOSSE DETERMINADO PELAS MENTES DOENTIAS DO POLITIBURO. PORTANTO GAGARIM FOI APENAS UMA MARIONETE NAQUELE SISTEMA. QUALQUER VACILO E ELE ERA SUBSTITUIDO NA HORA POR QUALQUER OUTRO PILOTO QUE ESTIVESSE PRONTO A ABAIXAR A CABECA PARA O SISTEMA. OUTRA COISA EXISTEM REPORTAGENS QUE POE EM DUVIDA SE REALMENTE YURI GAGARIM VOOU MESMO NAQUELE DIA NO ESPACO. OU SE NAO FOI O MAIOR CONTO DO VIGARIO DO PLANETA. POIS NENHUM ORGAO DA IMPRENSA INTERNACIONAL PODE REGISTRAR O FATO OU ACOMPANHAR O EPSODIO. DEPOIS DO PSEUDO VOO EH QUE AS AUTORIDADES SOVIETICAS ANUNCIARAM A PSEUDO FACANHA. CHAMEM OS ESPECIALISTAS PARA QUE SE PRONUNCIEM A RESPEITO DO ASSUNTO.

BIG MAN April 12, 2011 at 9:47 am

He looks like a proper joey

SANSAÓ COTRIM DOS SANTOS April 12, 2011 at 9:52 am

YURI GAGARIM? A GREAT MAN? WHY? We will analyze the TABLE. He lived in a
TOTALLY CAUGHT ENVIRONMENT WHERE PEOPLE HAD NO RIGHT TO DO
Nothing that was not DETERMINED BY THE POLITIBURO Unsound Mind. SO
GAGARIM been just a puppet in that system. ANY waver and he WAS
REPLACED BY ANY OTHER TIME IN THE PILOT THAT WERE READY TO GO DOWN A
HEAD FOR THE SYSTEM. OTHERWISE THERE ARE REPORTS THAT doubts whether
YURI REALLY THAT SAME DAY GAGARIM FLEW IN SPACE. OR IF IT WAS NOT THE GREATEST
TALE OF THE VICAR OF THE PLANET. BECAUSE NO INTERNATIONAL CAN press agency
REGISTER OR SUPPORT THE FACT EPSODIO. AFTER THAT HE PSEUDO FLIGHT
AUTHORITIES The Soviets announced PSEUDO Feat. CALL THE EXPERTS
For a ruling on the matter.

Such a brave man….salute to the man who gave us a strature of the future and made people actually think beyond the horizons of the earth.

wow April 12, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Great achievement; This was a pretty much unknown environment with no certainty of survival. Remember the Russians couldn’t even build reliable tractors capable of starting in the morning.

Imagine the adrenaline. More modern astronauts / cosmonauts have only just discovered that the minute blemishes in the gold reflective plating of their visors were in fact microparticles shooting straight through the space vehicle, their helmet and out the other side – via their brains.

I couldn’t afford that risk, and so decided not to accept any offer to travel into space…

A person of incredible courage. For those of us who love to trash the former USSR and their political system + speculate about Gagarin’s achievements — please, ask yourself: when was the last time YOU have done anything of similar magnitude? He was a real hero since the outcome of that mission was never certain… the outcome of space missions remains uncertain to this day! Kudos to Russians and congrats on the 50th Anniversary of Gagarin’s flight!

Maya April 23, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Russia faced so many difficulties to reach this psotiion. If Russia didn’t split in different countries no doubt it is the world’s most powerful country. Russia come to this psotiion with their (own) men power but America come to its psotiion with different countries people effort so Russia is the greatest country like India.
